On the outside, you'll find a seemingly tentative, geeky girl. On the inside, you'll find stories, dark ones, of herself and the people she observed, which find their release in her paintings. Johanna Helmuth is 23-year-old artist hailing from Binan who gets inspiration from Monet, Anselm Kiefer, Paula Rego, and other impressionists. She was an advertising student from the Technological University of the Philippines who, in a moment of epiphany, realized that she wanted to pursue a career in the visual arts. Shortly after such realization, she got into a group of art students called Studio 1616 mentored by Lynyrd Paras who got the attention of the art crowd through the event Art in the Park in 2010. And it all escalated after that. Her first solo exhibit, Disfigure, happened last May 8 through 16 at the Art Verite Gallery at the Ayala Museum in Makati City. Her paintings were to "purge frustrations and betrayals, illustrate loneliness, and depict sexual tensions and attractions".
