Crate digging, record shopping and more at Satchmi Vinyl Day 2016

Video by Earl Roxas / Photos by Andrei Suleik and Maphie Bolalin

It has been over a month since Satchmi Vinyl Day, but we can’t seem to get over how eventful the day was. Held last April 30 at UP Town Center, vinyl collectors and music lovers alike started flocking the amphitheater as early as noon to get a hold of rare records and other goods from Satchmi’s partner retailers. From handcrafted leather goods to air plants and succulents, even print magazines and hand-drawn art, the brands present that day embody the lifestyle Satchmi aims to uphold. Foodies were also delighted with a number of independent food and beverage brands all serving up tasty treats and thirst-quenching drinks.

Come two in the afternoon, the place was already filled with good music and equally good vibes as live music performances have already begun giving our ears an orgasmic treat. With Diego Mapa rolling in the classics with his vast vinyl collection, the succeeding acts had a tough act to follow, and they certainly lived up to everyone’s excitement.

If you missed this year’s Satchmi Vinyl Day, or you just simply want to reminisce, here’s a quick video recap of the event and a few photos.

Modern Man Cave at The Grove courtesy of The Village Barber and Supply Shop

 Photos by Marvin Conanan

With the rapidly growing men's grooming industry, it is clear that more and more upscale concept barbershops will sprout around the metro. This also seems like a good opportunity for pioneers to extend their reach through putting up new branches. Which is exactly what the people behind The Village Barber and Supply Shop have in mind, taking advantage of this opportunity to let more men experience their service. They recently opened their second shop at The Grove by Rockwell in Pasig City. A lot more spacious than their first branch at BGC, which makes room for a Table Tennis table, a bar, print display rack and bigger floorspace for the barbers area. They envision the space to be a place of solace for men, not only for personal grooming, but also for leisure and relaxation. Having this much space also inspires them to create events and gatherings to keep their community stronger, to offer more for the modern men of the country.

A look at Johanna Helmuth's Disfigure Exhibit

Photos and full story from Rogue

On the outside, you'll find a seemingly tentative, geeky girl. On the inside, you'll find stories, dark ones, of herself and the people she observed, which find their release in her paintings. Johanna Helmuth is 23-year-old artist hailing from Binan who gets inspiration from Monet, Anselm Kiefer, Paula Rego, and other impressionists. She was an advertising student from the Technological University of the Philippines who, in a moment of epiphany, realized that she wanted to pursue a career in the visual arts. Shortly after such realization, she got into a group of art students called Studio 1616 mentored by Lynyrd Paras who got the attention of the art crowd through the event Art in the Park in 2010. And it all escalated after that. Her first solo exhibit, Disfigure, happened last May 8 through 16 at the Art Verite Gallery at the Ayala Museum in Makati City. Her paintings were to "purge frustrations and betrayals, illustrate loneliness, and depict sexual tensions and attractions". Her paintings were a wallflower's catharsis from the pains that go with her relationships and experiences. Know more about the exhibit, the works, and the artist here.

Jordy Navarra Unveils Toyo Eatery to Showcase the Best of the Philippines

Photos and full story from Pepper.ph

Dexterous, ambitious, creative, and crazy, if you ask me, are the words that could describe Chef Jordy Navarra. And it is these qualities that is behind his greatest work yet - following his first act that was the Black Sheep. Upon establishing his new restaurant, Toyo Eatery, Navarra again proves his genius and commitment to turning his maddest, off-kilter ideas into the incredibly intense dishes that they are now. Who else would imagine that Patis, the condiment that usually comes from fish, can be created using squid and crabs - regardless of how disgusting the process may be? These crazy experiments, in turn, make way for the reinvention of familiar and once-ordinary flavors. To name one, Toyo Eatery offers grilled belly and loin of Bangus with Silog which serves as proof that there can be more to our usual "Bangsilog" than the dried flakiness that we've grown accustomed to and the boring garlic rice with egg on the side that's either too dry or too oily. Toyo Eatery's version features slowly-cooked and grilled bangus that has a plump, pillowy texture paired with umami-packed silog that is comparable to the Chinese lo mai ga wrapped in lotus leaf.

More than talent and commitment though, Navarra also exposes his love for all things Filipino through different elements found in Toyo. Most of the decors in the restaurant were made by local artisans. There's the Capiz light fixtures by Milo Naval, Acacia tables by Diretso, and Rattan chairs by E. Murio. This only shows that he aims to champion the Filipino, and he does so not only through his creations that brings a twist to the Pinoy classics.

Head on over to Pepper.ph to see more of what's in store for you at Toyo Eatery. To visit them personally, they are located at The Alley at Karrivin Plaza, 2316 Chino Roces Avenue in Makati. You can know more about them on their Facebook or Instagram accounts.
