Slick Barbers Co. holds the distinction as the crew that brought the Classic Faded Pompadour hairstyle to its current prominence. To bring back memories of how it was when they started out in 2014, they came up with a reissue of the SBCo Classic Traditional shirt. For the back print, the tee features the original Slick Barbers logo with the tagline "Keepers of the Fade". The front design is a barbershop pole to complete the old school vibe. They produced the t-shirt in black and white variations, available starting November 30 at the Slick Barbers Co. barbershop in Yague St., Makati City. Formerly known as The After-School Special, Anton Salvador now pursues his new electronic project, Pillow Talk. He is part of the progressive local electronic group, BuwanBuwan Collecctive. The new identity gave birth to new sounds, fusing Future Beats, Trap and RnB to his former genre arsenal, IDM, Glitch-Hop and Abstract Hip Hop. The end product is an amalgamation of sounds, "Soft delicate yet ethereal overtones and emotional soundscapes that paint us a picture of what a sound journal would be like if written by a closet romantic," in Pillow Talk's words, which he specifically calls "Introverted Dance Music." He also just recently released his debut EP, "The Year of Tolerance", which you can purchase from his bandcamp or partner stores. A few of his tracks are included along with other local tracks in the mix below.

Cebu City in photos through Colon Street Life by Promising Street Photographer, Darryll Rapacon
at
28.11.16
After his acclaimed Vietnam Photo Series spread online, we thought of challenging this promising photographer to create another street photography series, but now, something that's focused in the Philippines. We imagined that someone with a very observant eye like him would do great in representing a location in the country differently. A photo series that veers away from the slew of Instagram-inspired local travel photos we see online. Our quick discussion with him led to the idea of focusing on Cebu for the series, the place where he is also currently based. Darryll Rapacon is originally from Midsayap, North Cotabato, but have resided in Cebu to finish his Fine Arts major in Advertising Arts degree. In addition to the series, we interviewed him to know more about his photography process and inspirations, and his relationship with Cebu. Read the interview and view the powerful Colon Street, Cebu City Photography Series below.
"Walking around the area would give you a glimpse into the city’s vivid historic past... The street has been the best witness to all the changes within the Queen City of the South."
Interview by Marvin Conanan, Photos by Darryll Rapacon
Why did you start pursuing photography?
Like culture, photography is a way of life. Photography allows you to travel and learn about cultures around the world. Not only is it a passport to new places, but to new friends and learnings as well. All these have inspired me to pursue this craft.
What do you love and dislike most about Cebu?
Cebu is known for its rich history and culture. Walking in its streets enables me to access my creativity more readily. The art scene has this sense of community with everyone from all art forms coming together and expressing support. However, being a rapidly progressing city, Cebu’s traffic situation is worsening by the day. A lot of time that I could spend shooting is wasted waiting for vehicles to move.
Why did you choose to feature Colon Street in Cebu for this series?
Colon is the country’s oldest street. Walking around the area would give you a glimpse into the city’s vivid historic past. The street is an essential part of the Cebuano lifestyle, culture and history. Traces of its past as the main commercial district can still be seen today. The street has been the best witness to all the changes within the Queen City of the South.
What's your take away in doing this series? What have you learned in the process?
Finding the right time of the day to shoot is critical in telling a story through photographs. For the series, I decided to shoot at 5am everyday to present Colon in a different perspective - how the country’s first street comes alive. Shooting at the right time will not only show a different personality/character of a subject but also provide the photographer the right light for a more compelling photograph.
Can you give us an idea about your process?
Before starting a series, I spend time visualizing on how the series would be like and its purpose. Identifying the characters of the series is an essential part of my process. Having a clear idea of what story you’re trying to tell prepares you for the shoot. Unlike in countries or cities with distinct cultures, shooting here in Cebu presents the challenge of finding an interesting subject in an environment that everyone sees everyday. The location is as important as the subject. It’s not all the time that a subject is in a scene you had in mind. You have to wait for that decisive moment. I only shoot early in the morning and late in the afternoon. My process revolves on my belief that the transformation of a familiar scene into something different and engaging makes a shot artistic.
Do you see yourself pursuing photography full time?
Photographers who usually go full time and make a living out of it are mostly either wedding or commercial photographers. Lesser opportunities are available for street and travel photographers. Adjusting your style to the clients’ wants can be uninspiring. I can only see myself pursuing this craft full time if the work incorporates travel.
Who are your inspirations?
For my shooting process it’s Vivian Maier, but my philosophy is heavily influenced by one of the greatest photographers of all time, W. Eugene Smith. He inspired me to have a deeper insight into street photography.
Lastly, what's your number one tip for shooting street photography?
Shoot from the hip. It gives you more candid shots and it is a great way to go unnoticed. Since you’re shooting from a much lower angle, you often get a much more interesting perspective.
NewMeta and Door 3 Skate x Lifestyle team up for a Skate Video
at
28.11.16
One of the clothing brands that this year has birthed, NewMeta Clothing is an endeavor started by a team of artists as an outlet for their works. Door 3 Skate x Lifestyle houses a skate team featuring Los Baños stalwarts Joseph Esguerra, Tata Aguiero, and Joeriz Ortega and young bloods Tuklaw Bello, Ciro Borrero, and Orange Rey. The two outfits collaborate through a four-wheeled session in the campus of UP Los Baños to come up with a skate video for NewMeta's latest drop, the Hush Hypocrites Collection. Kenn Adayo did his thing, and Memoir took care of the editing. What they came up with is a reimagination of the concrete around the university. The video manages to portray skateboarding as an art form, with the clips highlighting the individual style that puts the beauty in each trick.

Local Tunes Round Up: Bawal Clan, crwn, August Wahh, Similarobjects, Cheats, and Skaa
at
23.11.16
The year is almost at its end but it looks like our local musicians are not yet done dropping amazing tracks and videos. In this week’s round up, look out for videos shot in colorful Japan, smooth RnB tunes, and chilled-out instrumental beats.
Skaa - Cole Haan (Prod. by Chryse)
Skaa’s latest release maybe named after a popular shoe and accessory brand, but don’t let the title fool you. The song is an ode to growing up and getting your sh*t together, with Skaa narrating his struggles and confidence to emerge victorious. It’s a quick song, but Skaa’s flow is so smooth you’ll end up wanting more. The solid song proves that he is on top of his game, and as he sings himself, it’s probably because “it comes easy when there’s passion involved.”
Just Hush, DZ SVG, Oj River & Krissy Cakes - R U Aaliyah?
Artist collective Bawal Clan released its latest Bawal Tape, this time assembling powerhouses Just Hush, DZ SVG, Oj River, and Krissy Cakes. Transitioning easily from Tagalog and English, the track provides a catchy hook and beat reminiscent of RNB tunes made popular in the early 2000s. The end result is a slick, smooth song worthy of endless replays. Listen to the track above.
August Wahh - Be Real
If you’re looking for a chill track that packs a lot of punch, August Wahh’s Be Real might be worthy of a spin. The latest release from the local producer, singer, and lyricist, Be Real is an empowered and empowering anthem oozing with swag despite its downplayed beats. And it looks like the soulful song is just the beginning of August Wahh’s return, as she croons herself, “I cannot be defeated, bless, I’m on the rise.”
Cheats - Ringer
Some videos capture isolation and loss with aplomb, embellished with a monochromatic palette and buckets of tears added for good measure. Local band Cheats foregoes predictable music video plots in exchange for something muted and yet unnerving. Set in the busy streets of Japan, we see singer Saab covered in a Hillary Clinton-esque mask, until a watermelon plushie replaces the mask as her crutch. She proceeds with her day with a new friend in tow, only to lose her prized plushie, and a distraught search to follow. Like the curious Japanese taking a peek at a masked stranger clutching a watermelon plushie, the video can be interesting at best and confusing to the uninitiated to Cheats’ penchant for the different, and that is precisely why it suits the song perfectly. Watch the video directed by Kyle Quismundo above.
Similarobjects - Mkmehl (Music Video)
Similarobjects’ Mkmehl is the second video in this round up that was shot in Japan, but this takes us to the parks and city trains of Tokyo. The video opts for a retro feel, with the song’s mellow beats introducing to us to the perspective of the couple played by Moeri Sakurai and Shoya Fukuda. All the quiet exposition builds up to the song’s climax, wherein the two leads give in to the beat, adding a dimension of movement to the otherwise static video. Mkhmehl, with the video directed by Raymond Teraoka Dacones, is off of Similarobjects’ latest album Rara Avis.
Previewing his new EP “Tommy Guns,” crwn released the track “you, me, and tommy guns.” In the track, crwn opts for a more relaxed vibe accompanied with soft percussion and the silky sound of the trumpet. “Tommy gun is a project grounded on moving on, appreciating your time with people you've loved or will love, and a lot of self-actualization. It's a collection of experiences I've gathered since 2013,” crwn shares with Bandwagon Asia. Stay tuned for the rest of crwn’s EP on Spotify and iTunes, dropping on December 4, 2016. Meanwhile, give his new track a spin above.
